“The only part of snowboarding that feels like a job is when I have to stay healthy and in shape. But I love staying healthy, I love eating good food. I don’t like to go the gym but it’s part of doing what I love to do. I treat it like my job is to stay healthy and that way I get to do what I love, which is snowboarding. When you’re feeling fit and healthy it just radiates to everything in your life. It makes you feel like a better, stronger person.”

Doing What You Love with Jake Blauvelt

This series explores men living their lives, doing what they love. A minority crowd, making their way in life following adventure, fun, joy and passion, inspiring others along the way.

The first in this series is a guy called Jake Blauvelt, who’d I’d never heard of until my subscription to Netflix delivered again with the documentary ‘Naturally’, a 36 minute back country snowboarding adventure with one of the most gifted snowboarders on the planet right now. His refreshing style and authenticity has won him huge respect within the industry and many see him as the pro’s pro-snowboarder.

‘Naturally’ was filmed over a two-year period in Japan, Sweden, France and British Columbia. This short, yet inspiring movie is all about Jake’s passion for natural terrain, where he lets his endless imagination run wild, exploring and responding to the features nature provides.

‘Naturally’ shows off Jake’s effortlessly smooth and creative style, which has lifted him into an elite group of top athletes in the snowboarding world. A man clearly doing what he loves, at the top of his game, living his passion, making something difficult look so graceful.

The sound track is epic too, in parts funky, and upbeat, in others deep, eerie and enticing, matching the amazingly beautiful images like they were made for each other. You can watch the trailer to the film below.

Jake’s Big Decision

Last year Jake was in London, where he was interviewed by Huck Magazine to talk about the film. He also chatted about how he had to make a decision between soccer and snowboarding, his other passion in life, here’s what he said :

“I love playing soccer, I always have. I had to chose between soccer and snowboarding when I was in High School. I’m glad I stuck with snowboarding. It’s definitely less competitive than soccer. I think I had a better chance at snowboarding, for sure. Europeans always find it really funny when Americans have a passion for soccer but I’m one of the few I guess.”

He also talked about how the injury he endured during the filming of this project, helped him get stronger, both mentally and physically, demonstrating the clear connection of the body and mind :

“I dislocated my shoulder and had to go straight into surgery. It was a 9 month recovery. During that time I realised a lot about my mental state at the time. My head was everywhere. Obviously, I was able to get my body strong and really get fit. But at the same time I got into yoga through my recovery process which helped my mental state a lot. You have to make sure that your mind and body are one. Before my injury I felt that my mind and body were very separate, afterwards I felt like they were one. I think all with all top athletes, their mind and body are working as one.”

Jake is clearly a man living his life in a way that fits with The Inspired Man’s philosophy. You can check out the trailer to the movie below and find out more about Jake on his website.
