Finding Ultra: Rejecting Middle Age, Becoming One of the World’s Fittest Men, and Discovering Myself, documents Rich Roll’s transformation, from a 50lb over weight 40 year old man, who went on to become one of the worlds top 25 fittest men, during a 3 year physical, mental and spiritual evolution.

Finding Ultra is a really well written and inspiring book. It has had a big impact on the way I now eat and illustrates the defining moments in life when at some point most people will say ‘enough is enough’.

In Rich’s case this was on the eve of his 40th birthday, after walking up a small flight of stairs to see say goodnight to his kids. When he arrived at the top gasping for breath. Call it higher wisdom or intuition, but in that moment he knew beyond doubt, he needed to change his lifestyle or he wouldn’t be around to see his children grow up.

This life changing moment, has subsequently sent Rich on many new adventures that have pushed him to new levels of discipline, fitness and a deeper connection with something much bigger than himself. From that day, Rich plunged head first into a new way of eating that made processed foods off-limits and that prioritized plant nutrition.

Vowing to exercise daily, Rich Roll morphed in a matter of mere months from an out-of-shape midlifer, to endurance machine. The seminal moment was when one morning ninety days into his physical overhaul, Rich left the house to embark on a light jog and found himself running a near marathon. It was at that point he decided to scale up his goals and he has gone on to become one of the worlds finest endurance athletes.

Beating Our Demons

This book also documents one the biggest human challenges many of us face, no matter what our backgrounds – fighting our demons.  Rich now sober for 15 years, was a pretty hardcore alcoholic, an ‘interest’ he found whilst at college. The story documents how drink overtook his life and destroyed the relationships with his parents and wife.

If you’re struggling with something that’s holding you back, Rich is evidence of what’s possible when you’re able to first admit you have a problem, and then be wiling to seek help to let it go.

If you love running you’ll want to read this book. If you want to make changes, be inspired and get a glimpse of what’s possible when you commit to something bigger than yourself, you’ll also want to read this. And If you’ve read it, I’d love to know what changes you made to your life as a result?
