How to Beat Anxiety and Achieve Greater Success

Stress and anxiety are one of the biggest factors that mean you’ll never really know what you want or achieve the success you’re capable of. The truth is the more at peace you feel the more access you have to clarity – and who doesn’t want to know what they really want?

My Experience of Anxiety

I notice the more I spend my days thinking, the more I take myself out of action. Thinking whilst an important tool for making our way in the world, can sometimes be very overrated! Action on the other hand leads to change, and often I notice when I am feeling anxious it is because I want things to be different. The more I ruminate and do nothing, the farther away what I want becomes and the greater anxiety I feel.

What Causes Anxiety?

Thought, like water is constantly in flow, when you ruminate, over think or take too much notice of the content of your thinking the flow stops. You create what is more like a whirlpool than a stream. The same thoughts about the same problems keep swirling around. With each swirl they seem bigger and more real. The greater the anxiety and stress.

What is the Very Next Smallest Step?

The way out of this is to take action. Identify the very next step to move you forward. Let go of the thoughts telling you it’s too scary or you’re not good enough. Instead just do it, and notice how you feel when you’re actually doing something about a problem instead of thinking about it.

Accept and appreciate what and who you are, but initiate the change you want. Don’t put up with what’s not working. That’s just stupidity.

Anxiety is caused by investing too much of your attention on thoughts which take you away from the present moment. The way to feel less anxious is by taking more notice of where you place your attention. Yet lets not delude ourselves, that there are always going to events in life, when things show up like an unexpected bill, a noisy neighbour or an erratic driver or much worse, that are going to be potential triggers for anxiety and stress.

But none of these are ever the cause, you are always feeling the effects of your thinking about life, not the circumstances. So now when these events happen again, take a deep breath and remember every circumstance offers you the chance to practice overcoming fear and anxiety, to ride above it and grow.

Life is unlikely to be ever straightforward. However you can make it easier, especially now you know you create your experience of life moment to moment via your thinking. Your feelings aren’t determined by budget cuts, the economy or how much money you have in the bank. You don’t feel lonely because you’re single or lack confidence and so on. It is always your thinking about your circumstances, who you are and what you believe is possible, which determines how you feel.

It is that simple, where your attention goes energy flows, so let energy move through you instead of getting stuck on those one or many thoughts which has held you back until now. You are in charge, not your thinking. Learn to let go and follow good feelings, they will be your saviour.
